Swagelok and ISO Standards

Meeting International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Requirements

With aggressive advancements in energy production and exploration taking place worldwide, standardization is critical to ensure a smooth supply chain—making sure the right components made with the right materials get to the right place at the right time. Adherence to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards is one of the many ways Swagelok works to ensure our customers get exactly what they need.

Swagelok’s knowledge and implementation of ISO standards are a vital part of our commitment to customer care and quality. It allows us to answer in advance many of the most pressing questions you have about critical operational issues, including:

  • Performance
  • Safety
  • Durability
  • Material
  • Contamination
  • Process and quality management
  • Environmental and sustainability

Swagelok’s commitment to ISO compliance goes beyond our product offerings. We work closely with our customers to achieve a precise understanding of where and how ISO standards apply to their particular applications.

What is ISO?

The ISO was founded shortly after the conclusion of World War II in response to emerging issues within industry as a collective whole.

While the herculean task of successfully conducting the war transformed innumerable industrial operations worldwide, it also exposed the often-chaotic inconsistencies arising from a wide variance in standardization. In a world eager to rebuild, these inconsistencies often disrupted international trade, compromised product safety, and complicated industrial collaboration. It was in the clear and vital interests of many nations and industries to standardize in a sustainable manner.

On February 23, 1947, representatives from 25 countries established the ISO to address these disparities in a way that could be reliably expanded upon in years to come. Some of the organization’s initial efforts were centered around foundational issues such as:

  • Terminology (ISO/R 37): Lexical representations and language
  • Metrics (ISO 31): Quantities, units, and symbols
  • Industrial Processes (ISO/R 1, R 286, and R 263): Reference temperatures, tolerances, sizes, and scales

As the years passed, the organization's scope of standardization has grown to encompass over 25,000 documents, addressing a vast selection of interests ranging from process management and manufacturing to health and safety.

Swagelok Understands ISO Standards

Some of the most important aspects of ISO standardization are those that guide a provider’s approach to systems management—the means by which quality of output can be most consistently assured. Swagelok holds ISO certifications in a number of system management domains, including:

  • ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management System
  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management System Certification
  • ISO 9001: Quality Management System Certificate

Equally important are the ISO standards that guide the quality, durability, and interoperability of critical system components, assuring customers that performance and safety demands will be reliably met. ISO standards with which various Swagelok processes, materials, and components comply include:

  • ISO 15156: Components for oil & gas wet, sour hydrogen sulfide (H2S) environments
  • ISO 15500-1: Hydrogen and compressed natural gas (CNG) pressure application components
  • ISO 12619: Compressed gaseous hydrogen components
  • ISO 19880: Gaseous hydrogen fueling stations
  • ISO 19848: Ships and marine technology
  • ISO 5211: Interoperability for pneumatic actuators
  • ISO 5: Cleanroom environments
  • ISO 14644-1: Cleanroom air quality for semiconductor-grade components

Working in collaboration with our customers to understand and apply ISO standards is a hallmark of Swagelok’s commitment to excellence. Have specific questions about ISO standards? Contact one of nearly 200 authorized Swagelok sales and service center locations to find answers.
