Enhance Weld Consistency with New Solutions from Swagelok

Automatic ID purge control, manual mode, and hand torch now available

SOLON, Ohio (November 2, 2010)--Swagelok Company announced today the introduction of two new options for its M200 power supply, both designed to enhance weld consistency and quality.  A new automatic inside diameter (ID) purge control system dynamically changes purge flow to maintain proper ID pressure at the weld joint. And for welders who prefer the flexibility of manual welding with the consistency of orbital welding, a manual mode and hand torch accessory are now available.

The Swagelok welding system M200 power supply offers precision and control combined with easy-to-use touch-screen operation for orbital welding. According to John Glessman, product manager, Swagelok Company, the new solutions are designed to enhance output consistency for a more streamlined experience and ability to produce more welds per day.

Automatic ID Purge Control

The Swagelok® patent-pending ID purge control dynamically changes purge flow to maintain proper ID pressure at the weld joint. When combined with the M200’s automatic control for outside diameter (OD) shield gas, the result is a complete, automated system for purge control and consistent weld process and weld quality.

“In general, ID purge control is a large variable in orbital welding,” said Glessman. “Some applications require constant manual adjustment of ID purge throughout the welding process. This takes a certain amount of skill and if not done properly may cause significant rework due to poor weld quality.”

Automatic ID purge control helps eliminate these undesirable welds, which is critical for industries with high-purity requirements such as semiconductor and biopharmaceutical.

The ID purge settings are established through either automatic weld procedure generation or simple key entry. A highly responsive mass flow controller (MFC) inside the M200 and an external pressure sensor provide more accurate and consistent purge gas control than manual processes. Real-time monitoring of all purge operations is recorded in the M200 weld log detail.

The automatic ID purge control option is available with initial M200 power supply orders or can be integrated into an existing machine at any of the nine equipment service centers located around the world. Installation includes a software upgrade, MFC for the ID purge gas supply, and an external component kit. Equipment service centers, a supplement to the company’s 200-plus sales and service centers, are located in the United States, Switzerland, Japan, India, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Korea, and Taiwan.

Manual Mode and Hand Torch

For added flexibility in the welding process, Swagelok has added a manual mode to its standard orbital functionality, allowing for manual TIG welding with the consistency of orbital welding. When the hand torch accessory is plugged into the power supply, all weld output and adjustments are graphically displayed. Manual weld controls are brought up on the high-resolution, 12.1 in. (30.7 cm) color industrial touch-screen. The power supply features a built-in MFC that automatically sets the flow rate for shield gas. Any adjustments made by the operator display on screen.

The manual mode is designed for use in many markets, including oil and gas, semiconductor, and biopharmaceutical. While the upgrade will be standard for all new power supplies, equipment currently deployed in the field can be updated by a Swagelok weld specialist. Customers should contact their Swagelok sales and service center for more details.

The hand torch accessory kit is also for sale through Swagelok sales and service centers. The kit includes one torch, cabling, clamp, and 10 electrodes. The gas-cooled, 125 amp capacity torch features a brass head, fail-safe hose fittings, and silicon rubber insulation.
