What do you look for in a tube fitting?

Pressure containment?
Leak tight seal?
Vibration fatigue resistance?

Swagelok meets the challenges of ever-increasing fluid system demands by using advances in design and breakthroughs in material science. The result? Swagelok tube fittings provide extraordinary performance in a broad range of applications.

The performance of the Swagelok advanced geometry tube fitting comes from a combination of design features. The most significant features are the patented back ferrule geometry and patented SAT12 case hardening process.

The Swagelok patented back ferrule geometry provides a hinging colleting action that enables the tube fitting to perform remarkably well in three key areas.
  • Tube Grip – for pressure containment
  • Gas Seal – for leak-tight performance
  • Vibration Resistance – for protection from outside forces
Finite Element Analysis or FEA model of the Swagelok tube fitting advanced geometry designThis image is a Finite Element Analysis or FEA model of the Swagelok tube fitting advanced geometry design. An FEA is a computer aided mathematical technique that realistically models elastic and plastic deformation. More specifically, it shows the level of stress imparted in the material. The blue indicates low or no stress; yellow to red shows increasingly higher stresses.

This FEA clearly demonstrates the patented radial colleting action of the fully case hardened back ferrule. This action enables more material of the back ferrule to come in contact with, or collet the tube. The colleting action provides additional support in the areas of tube grip and vibration resistance. Only the Swagelok advanced geometry tube fitting offers this benefit.

The back ferrule also drives the front ferrule up and forward to produce a burnishing or polishing action of the front ferrule with the fitting body bevel and tube. This design allows the fitting to provide a leak-tight gas seal.

The back ferrule is treated with a patented case hardening process called SAT12. Developed by Swagelok, this hardening method enriches the surface of the stainless steel by consistently diffusing carbon atoms into the spaces between the key elements that make-up stainless steel.

The patented SAT12 process:
  • Delivers extraordinary hardness
  • Retains ductility, and
  • Creates no dimensional change
The Swagelok tube fitting performs in a wide range of dynamic conditions that have been documented in product test reports. There is also an extensive list of independent third-party witness tests, approvals, and certifications. Swagelok is proud to include ASTM F-1387, as witnessed by the US Navy, on this list, which is exclusive to Swagelok tube fittings in the ferrule-type fitting category. Additionally, Swagelok tube fittings are backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The advanced Swagelok tube fitting provides robust tube grip, leak-tight gas seal, and excellent vibration resistance across a wide range of applications.
